Entry Requirements
Basic requirements: A Bachelor's degree (equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, 180 ECTS) from an internationally recognised university. Special Requirements: at least 90 ECTS-credits in Tourism/ Geography/ Human Geography/ Regional Science/ Planning/ Hospitality/ Hotel and Restaurant Management/ Service Management/ Leisure/ Recreation/ Park Management or similar tourism-related subjects. Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.
Degree
After completed study programme, a student who has applied for a degree certificate can obtain a Degree of Master of Science (60 credits) according to the local qualification descriptor established by the Vice-Chancellor, see Umeå University's web site. The Swedish translation of Degree of Master of Science (60 credits) is Filosofie magisterexamen. The degree is awarded in the main field of Human Geography (kulturgeografi) with the specialisation Tourism and Sustainable Development (turism och hållbar utveckling).

Description of the education for current education cycle

Transfer of Credits
Student who considers themselves to possess knowledge from previous relevant studies or professional or vocational experience that can be comparable to a course or part of a course in the study programme, can apply for transfer of credits. Approved transfer of credits means that the student does not need to take the or those parts of the education that the decision covers. Information about transfer of credits can be found on Umeå University's web site.
General
Compulsory courses are courses that all students within the study programme normally take. A student who takes a study programme is guaranteed a place on all compulsory courses under the condition that the entry requirements for the course in question have been met. Entry requirements are stated in each course syllabus. The courses are offered in the order listed under the heading Outline. The order of the courses may however be subject to change. For information on how individual courses are set up see the different course syllabus. The courses are normally offered in English.
Thesis For Degree of Master of Science 60 credits the student must have completed a thesis comprising at least 15 credits in Human Geography.
For Degree of Master of Science 120 credits the student must have completed a thesis comprising 30 credits in Human Geography. The thesis may comprise less than 30 credits (a minimum of 15 credits) if the student has already completed an independent work in the second cycle of at least 15 credits in Human Geography or equivalent from an international education.
