Moving in

We are very happy that you have found a housing in Umeå. Here you will find information about your home, for example how you fix internet to your housing and your laundry or storage room. We hope that you will feel comfortable and have a pleasant time here.

Your Keys

You can pick up your keys at Infocenter, Universum Building on Campus after 3 p.m. (15:00) on the day of your contracts start. You can find Infocenter´s opening hours.

If you arrive when Infocenter is closed, you can ask a friend or colleague to pick up your keys. In that case, enter the person's name on your My Page under 'Book Pickup' in the Keys section. Also inform your friend that they will need to show their passport or ID card.

Lock-outs

If you lock yourself out, you can find the contact information in the material sent to you with your contract.

This information is also available on your “My Page.” The fee is approximately 1,000 SEK. Always carry the emergency number with you. You may need to show your contract, so we recommend saving a screenshot of it on your mobile phone.

Change of lock

For security reasons, the locks are always changed when keys have been lost or are not returned on the date of departure. If you lose your key, regardless of cause (e.g. carelessness, theft, or force majeure), you are obliged to meet the full cost for a lock change. The cost varies depending on which type of key there is, and how many keys there are for the specific housing object. Contact the Housing Office for payment procedures. Please note that all fees are subject to change.

Report damages

Any damages to the apartment, room or furniture must be reported to Housing@umu.se as soon as possible.

Post box

Put your name on your mailbox so that the Postal Service in Umeå can deliver letters and parcel notifications to you. If you live at Lasarettsbacken 5 A–C, this is handled digitally by Housing.

Storage room

If there is an associated storage unit for the apartment, you can find information about its location in the material sent to you with the contract.

This information is also available on your “My Page.”

Laundry room

You will have a laundry room either at your floor, in the basement or in the block where you live, all depending on in which area you stay. If you cannot find your laundry room, talk to your neighbours or call your local caretaker. Laundry is free of charge. However, you need to book it in advance, and leave it clean for the next person.

Internet

Internet is available when you arrive at the apartment.

Insurance

International postdoc, scholarship holders and guest researchers are covered by an insurance for foreign visitor provided by Kammarkollegiet. The insurance gives a 24-hour coverage in Sweden. Find insurance conditions here. If you don’t find the information you are looking for, please contact your human resource administrator at your department for information.

Included in the insurance is also a property insurance up to a value of 25,000 SEK. As a tenant, you are responsible for your accommodation, irrespective of whether you are to blame for any damage, or if damage is caused by your friends. No consideration can be taken in regard to whether the damage is the result of carelessness, an accident or some deliberate act. As the legal tenant you will be held responsible for payment. Note also that neither the landlord nor Umeå University can be held responsible for any theft or loss of your personal possessions. We would therefore recommend you to bring your own property insurance, to cover any possible costs due to loss of or damage to property worth more than 25,000 SEK.

Regulations

Cleaning

As a tenant, you are responsible for cleaning your own room/apartment during your stay. You are also responsible for keeping the refrigerators, freezers, ovens, and the filter in the cooker hood clean.

Preventing fire

It is not allowed to smoke indoors, or to store inflammable material, bicycles or other bulky objects in common areas as kitchen, corridors or stairwells. If we – after your departure – find that you have been smoking, you will be charged a sanitation fee of approx of 4000 SEK. All emergency exits have to be free of objects or hindrances. If you set off the fire alarm accidentally, e.g. during a party, you will be held responsible for the eventual costs. Please do not leave candles burning and cooking unattended. Make sure that your fire detector is functioning.

Rubbish and waste

Household waste must be disposed of in the appropriate containers. Remember to make sure that your rubbish bags are sealed tightly. You are not allowed to keep bags of waste in the corridors, stairwells or on balconies. Some areas have garbage disposal systems.

Be considerate

You are allowed to have parties at your accommodation, but keep in mind that you as a host are responsible for any damages or disturbances caused. Think about your neighbours and try to keep things quiet at night and in the mornings. Noise should be avoided from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. In case your neighbours disturb you, be considerate and reason with them first. If this does not help, contact your caretaker or the Housing Office.
