Research project Coal fuels have been used for a long time in mineral processing industries, and their characteristics and effects on product quality are well known. Bio-based fuels available, however, introduce new challenges in terms of lower heating value, new and challenging feeding properties, and especially in totally new relative compositions of ash forming elements. This project targets some of the bottlenecks associated with introducing renewable fuels in quicklime and cement clinker production.
This project addresses two main areas: 1) The buildup of specific competence( Umu, RISE) in analyzing (active) surface are of raw materials for the targeted processes. 2) A joint effort (Umu, LTU) to develop a process simulating CFD model for the Twin Shaft Regenerative kilns, aiming at process optimization and increased fuel flexibility. Both areas are connected to the overall goal to increase the use of renewable energy carriers in Swedish mineral processing industries.
